The Human Tissue Authority (HTA) is the national independent regulator for organisations that remove, store and use tissue for research, medical treatment, post-mortem examination, teaching and display in public. We also give approval for organ and bone marrow donations from living people.
The HTA produces nine codes of practice to give professionals practical guidance on human tissue legislation. These codes were updated in July 2014 to reflect recent policy decisions and legal advice.

The HTA was established on 1 April 2005 under the Human Tissue Act 2004 (HT Act) which extends to England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
