Regulation fit for the needs of today and the future

The Human Tissue Authority works to maintain public safety and public confidence in the removal, storage and use of human tissue and organs, seeking to ensure that these activities are undertaken ethically and with proper consent, whilst avoiding any harm or injury.  We license more than 1,000 premises, working across six different sectors which cover both living and deceased tissue.

Licensed establishments are expected to adhere to standards set out in Codes of Practice established under the Human Tissue Act (2004) which have been laid before Parliament.

Dr Colin Sullivan, Chief Executive of the Human Tissue Authority said: “We aim to be an excellent, modern and accountable regulator. Our business plan sets out how in 2026/27, we will continue to refine the way we work, seeking to continue to effectively protect the public and maintain public confidence, whilst being more proportionate and risk-based in our interactions with those we regulate”.
