The Human Tissue Authority (HTA) has been made aware that two HTA-licensed establishments are to enter administration. These two services are Precious Cells International Ltd and Pharmacells Ltd; both establishments are private tissue banks that, amongst other things, offer services to bank cord blood and other materials. Pharmacells Ltd is owned by Precious Cells International Ltd. The appointed administrators are Crowe Clark Whitehill LLP*.
Clients of the services will understandably be concerned, but we would like to reassure them that we have been working with the establishment to ensure that the safety and quality of any stored material is maintained, and we will now work similarly with the administrators.
This should have no immediate impact on material managed for clients of Precious Cells International Ltd, as this is stored under contract with independent third party organisations.
We are also working to assess the status of material stored for clients at Pharmacells Ltd to ensure that it is being stored and maintained appropriately.
The HTA does not have a role in regulating the financial health of an establishment, or enforcing client contracts, but if any material is found to have been adversely affected, any clients involved will be contacted directly with advice on how to proceed.
We will be updating this page with more information when it is available.
