HTA’s Code of Practice for Wales approved by Welsh Government

Issue date:
09 October 2015

This Code was passed by Parliament in November 2015 and the HTA published the Code on 1 December here.

The HTA welcomed the approval of the Code of Practice for Wales, following discussion in the National Assembly for Wales earlier this week.

The Code of Practice offers practical guidance to professionals working under the new Human Transplantation (Wales) Act 2013, which will come into force in Wales on 1 December 2015. This new law creates an opt-out system of organ and tissue donation for adults who live and die in Wales.

During the discussion Mark Drakeford, Welsh Minister for Health and Social Services, noted the seriousness with which the HTA developed the Code and the extent of the consultation process.

Allan Marriot-Smith, HTA Chief Executive said: “We welcome the approval of the HTA’s Code of Practice for Wales and listened with interest to the thoughtful comments made by Assembly Members during the discussion. The approval of the Code is an important milestone ahead of the new law coming into force on the 1 December. The Code provides health professionals in Wales with practical advice and guidance in situations where someone’s consent to donate is not clear”.
