Coding and import Directives: import licence applications now open

Issue date:
31 January 2018

The Human Tissue Authority (HTA) is now accepting applications from establishments in the human application (HA) sector that import tissues and cells. This is to ensure all importing tissue establishments comply with new EU Directives on coding and import for human tissue and cells. These Directives are due to come into force in the UK on 1 April 2018 via The Human Tissue (Quality and Safety for Human Application) (Amendment) Regulations 2018.

All establishments who currently hold an HA licence that includes import must complete an application, if they wish to continue undertaking this activity. The information contained in the application is required to enable the HTA to assess compliance with the new import Directive and will be used as the basis for issuing new import licences which will include an Importing Tissue Establishment Licence certificate.

The portal for submission of import licence applications is open from 1 February – 5 March 2018.

More information on how to apply for an import licence is available on our website.

Further information on the new Directives and how they will affect establishments in the UK is available in the HTA guidance on the coding and import Directives, and also the HTA website
