Some parents wish to donate cord blood, but they are unable to donate to a public cord blood bank because UK public banks only collect cord blood from certain hospitals. Two UK private cord blood banks offer services which allow parents to donate cord blood so that it will be available more widely to patients outside the donor’s family:
- Precious Cells Miracle operates a collection service through several UK hospitals allowing parents to donate their entire cord blood unit free of charge.
- Virgin Health Bank offers an option for parents to pay a reduced storage fee so that 20% of the cord blood is kept for their own private use and 80% is donated; collection can be undertaken at most UK hospitals.
Currently, neither bank is able to make these units available on publically accessible national and international registries.
