Professor Sir James Underwood
Until his retirement in December 2006, James Underwood was Professor of Pathology at the University of Sheffield, Consultant Histopathologist to the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and Dean of Sheffield University's Faculty of Medicine.

James has more than 40 years experience of using human tissues in diagnosis, education and research. As Vice-President and, from 2002 to 2006, President of the Royal College of Pathologists, Sir James has led his profession’s response to the problems arising from tissue retention and use. He was awarded a knighthood for services to medicine in the 2005 New Year honours list.
