Post mortem facilities at University Llandough Hospital, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board
The Human Tissue Authority (HTA)’s recent inspection of Cardiff’s University of Hospital Wales Llandough (University Hospital Llandough) has demonstrated that its post mortem facilities are an example of best practice.
Issue date: 8 August 2010
The Human Tissue Authority (HTA)’s recent inspection of Cardiff’s University of Hospital Wales Llandough (University Hospital Llandough) has demonstrated that its post mortem facilities are an example of best practice, says Craig Muir, HTA’s Chief Executive: “Our inspection of University Hospital Llandough on 28 April identified evidence of exemplary practice. Llandough met all the HTA standards in full.
“It is crucial to maintain public and professional confidence in post-mortem examinations as they are a source of valuable information for diagnosis of death and medical research.
“The management and all of the staff involved in the delivery of post mortem services have worked hard to ensure that standards are very high. The collaborative working locally and across Wales is clear in the documentation and systems which have been developed to meet the needs of the service and ensure that HTA requirements are met. The inspection team has suggested that Llandough become a referral establishment for other licensed premises which may be experiencing difficulties in meeting HTA standards.”
“Last year we took regulatory action in relation to University Hospital of Wales Cardiff, part of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. Our inspections there show that considerable effort has been put in to meeting our standards.”
It should be noted that University Hospital Llandough, which is also part of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, was not one of the facilities against which the HTA took action.
HTA’s summary of inspection reports, due to be published in the spring, will share learning for the sector to support good practice and continue to drive up standards.
