Accredited Assessors

Under the Human Tissue Act 2004, any potential donation of bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) from adults who lack capacity to consent and children who lack competence to consent, must be assessed by an Accredited Assessor and a report submitted to the HTA for consideration.

The HTA trains Accredited Assessors (AAs) to assess potential bone marrow and PBSC donations from adults who lack capacity and children who lack competence to consent.

Once accredited by the HTA, AAs act as a representative for the donor and the HTA.

Following an assessment, AAs submit a report of their assessment to the HTA. The HTA makes the decision whether or not to approve the proposed donation.

How to become an AA

Please see the Guidance for transplant teams and Accredited Assessors for a person specification of the AA role. If you meet the person specification please complete the Accredited Assessor application form.

The HTA will request a reference once this has been received and is satisfactory. A training package also has to be completed.

Further information about the role of the AA is available in the HTA’s code of practice on the Donation of allogeneic bone marrow and PBSC for transplantation and in the Guidance for transplant teams and Accredited Assessors.

For enquiries about the AA role, the person specification, or further information on how to apply to become an AA, please email transplants@hta.gov.uk or call 020 7269 1900.

Online submission system for AA reports

AAs submit their reports using the HTA’s online submission system. This is a secure system which is data protected.

If the online system is unavailable, please complete an Accredited Assessor contingency report.
